Mark S. Burnham Provincial Park

Mark S. Burnham Provincial Park, located on the southeastern outskirts of the City of Peterborough, has often been cited as a fine example of “old growth forest” (Ontario's Old-growth Forests, Henry and Quinby 2010).  See AFER's field report.

Numerous trees in the park have many of the external features of old growth trees, including balding bark, low stem taper, and broken crowns. In 2012, eleven trees exhibiting these characteristics were cored by NHIC staff members using an increment borer and a report was prepared. The oldest trees were aged at a minimum as follows: 208, 235 and 330 years old.
